You love going to parties because you get to nosh on items you don’t normally get to have. Parties are a great time to mix and mingle with friends, but it’s also fun to try new and different appetizers and find foods that you otherwise wouldn’t have on a regular basis. Here are five foods that people only get to eat at parties.

1. Meatballs – unless you’re eating a large plate of spaghetti, you rarely get to enjoy meatballs unless you’re at a party and they’re served as an appetizer. Meatballs are a simple and efficient way to get protein at a party where you’re piling your plate with all sorts of food choices. Meatballs can be made from a variety of meats like beef, pork, turkey, or even exotic cuts like buffalo or bison. Most times at parties, the meatballs are accompanied by a sauce and served on toothpicks. There’s just something about popping a spicy meatball into your mouth that just says it’s a party.

2. French onion dip – while it’s easy enough to pick up a carton of French onion dip in the grocery store, or whip up a batch yourself with a mix and sour cream, we just don’t do it because it’s a delicacy of any party you attend. Most all parties have a crudité or vegetable platter set out with broccoli, carrots, celery, cauliflower, radishes, and peppers. And in the middle of this fabulous platter is a dish of fresh made French onion dip. Dipping vegetables in anything else almost seems like a travesty. The smoothness and creaminess of the dip pairs perfectly with the crunchy vegetables. It’s not just for potato chips anymore.

3. Cheese straws – people look forward to weddings, bridal showers, and holiday parties to get a taste of the perfect party food – cheese straws. Made simply of flour, butter, cheese, and paprika, these light, crunchy delicacies make any party table pop. They go great with any drinks you serve from wine to beer to mixed drinks, sodas, and juice drinks. No one really knows the exact origin of cheese straws, but they started in the southern United States and have spread into a staple at any good party. People don’t tend to make these at home for themselves although they’re quite easy to bake. Instead, they look forward to snacking on them at the next soiree they attend, nabbing them by the fistful.

4. Pigs in a blanket – this is another comfort-type food that is a no-brainer to make. Biscuit dough wrapped around a cocktail wiener and baked until golden brown. Something so simple should be enjoyed on a regular basis, but it seems people only get to snack on them at a party. They’re quick and easy to make and please any crowd. The soft pastry dough couples with the tangy and salty meat to create a taste sensation in your mouth. They’re served warm and can literally make up an entire meal if you’re not careful. Any good hostess has plenty pigs in a blanket on hand on her appetizer table.

5. Deviled eggs – the simple act of boiling an egg, cutting it in half, removing the cooked yolk, mixing it with a few ingredients and returning it to the shell is something people don’t take the time to do for themselves at home. But when these creamy delights are served at a party, watch them disappear in a heartbeat. There’s something about the saltiness and creaminess of the filling stuffed inside the firm egg up that awakens the taste buds and makes people feel at home. Deviled eggs can be kicked up with caviar, shrimp, mustard, or dill. There’s nothing boring about the sensation of biting into a deviled egg. That’s why they’re a great party food and a real crowd pleaser.

These are just a few foods that people only get to eat at parties. However, these yummy treats need not only be relegated to the banquet table. Try these tasty treats at your next event or just as a fun surprise for your family. Turn any day at your house into a party.
